Is it not a pain when people start assuming you're friends with them when it's oh so clear that you're not, were not, and wouldn’t be? You're not being mean. You just can't be nice to everyone; especially to certain people you just can't dig. When they’re the kind who leave you annoyed, exhausted, and confused at the end of every conversation. You try everything to shun eye contact, to pass up their repetitive invitations of having meals together, to pretend that you didn't hear them asking why you feel gloomy or glad. You also don’t remember any instance of having the initiative to start a conversation, because you’re NOT friends, and you don’t want to be. Despite all the obvious hints that you don’t want them around you - sticking with you like some kind of a sick joke -they actually believe you have a relationship. They think that all the smiles and compliments are true and genuine when it’s evident that they’re fake and full of sarcasm.
Sometimes it makes you wonder. Are they faking it? Do they know that you function better without them but pretend to not notice? Maybe they see it, but they just shrug it off since they’ve become so used to the entire pretense. They chose to get used to it because for them it’s better to have phony friends than to not have friends at all.
